The Washington Monument from inside the Lincoln Memorial

wash-monument-dc-IMG_3927.JPG

I really thought that this photo was not going to be a good one, I hadn’t even lined up the camera on the tripod yet (I did straighten this) and I took the to see how the timing came out. I took a few more photos that were more thought out / planned and this one turned out to be one of my favorite photos.

f/3.5 for 2.5 seconds at ISO 320, I was zoomed all the way out to 18mm, I’m assuming this is my 18-200mm and not the 18-55mm, but I’m not certain.

Missing walls at the Packard Plant

packard-wall-IMG_6622.jpg
This was one morning when we were out exploring the Packard Plant in Detroit. This is a huge automotive plant that closed over fifty years ago. Some portions were used after that by other companies but I dot think this building had been used for a while. There’s graffiti everywhere around there and it’s just falling apart everywhere. There are railroad tracks not far back that run parallel to that back wall (with all the windows), the tracks were actually where I was heading to get some photos when I took this shot.

Feta Sleeze from the Detroit Derby Girls is kicking butt!

feb202015derbyvid.jpeg
The is Feta Sleeze from one of the Detroit Derby Girls roller derby teams, she’s my hero! If you’ve never gone to the derby you need to go sometime. They play on a flat track at Masonic Temple in Detroit. I love the sense of motion and action in this image.

I have to admit this isn’t actually a photo, it’s a screen capture from a video, but I posted it online and every time I see it in the photostream it catches my eye so I decided to post it here. It took me a few minutes to find it since I forgot it’s not actually a photo. Here’s a link to a short video I made on YouTube.

This was taken with my Canon SX260 which is a great pocket camera (great zoom, great video, and built-in GPS).

Pelican taking off near Merritt Island

Pelican Merritt Island Florida

I was rollerblading along the bridge/overpass/park connecting Florida to Merritt Island (they’ve kinda got a park/fishing pier along the bottom edge of part of the bridge) and saw this Pelican. I caught him a few times, but I think this was one of the better shots. I’ve got a nice one of him(?) standing still, but it’s boring compared to this one.

That’s at 1/400th of a second, but we can still see the motion at the tips of his wings.

Sunrise on Belle Isle

sunrise-belle-isle-IMG_1163.JPG
This is on Belle Isle in Detroit, Michigan (the largest city park that is an island in the United States). I’m pretty sure this is the casino (which I’ve never seen open for anything ever) but I’m confused as to what direction I’m actually facing versus where water is (compared to where I’d expect the colors in the sky). I’ve looked at satellite photos and the few other photos I took at the same time and I’m not really sure (being dark in the photo doesn’t help). I have some slightly brighter colored versions but I like how deep the colors in this one turned out with the texture of the clouds.

(Actually, it’s a state park now, but it was a city park when I took the photo!)

Ox cart in Costa Rica

ox-g2015_12.jpg
We were on our way to Quepos from Jaco in a taxi, we had waited a few hours for the bus and after seeing none heading south, we grabbed a taxi. This is along the main road that runs near the Pacific Coast. While we were unsuccessful in taking a bus down to Quepos, we were able to catch a directo bus back to San Jose but were able to get off near Jaco and walk the mile(?) back. This is an old photo from my second or third trip to Costa Rica, I’ve always loved this particular photo.

I’m not sure if I took it with a film camera or a digital camera and had them converted to digital at the time of developing, the photo EXIF information is vague but has the word Kodak (that’s who would have done the conversion but I also had a digital pocket Kodak camera at that time).

Sunset on the Train Tracks

I was driving through Schoolcraft, Michigan (very southwest Michigan) and saw the way the sunset was shining on the train tracks so I turned around and parked so I could a few photos.

I took this with my iPhone but I might have used the Camera+ app, which allows for a little easier focusing on one area when determining the light source from another. But I don’t know how to tell if it was from Camera+ once it gets into my camera roll (it doesn’t seem to be in the EXIF photo info).

Ambassador Bridge from Michigan Central Station

Ambassador Bridge
This was taken from Michigan Central Station (Roosevelt Park) just off of Michigan Avenue in Detroit. You can see the Ambassador bridge in the distance. This is a slightly brightened version of something I think I’d done a little HDR tweaking to. Actually, the filename revealed that I “enfused” it, which is something along the lines of HDR, in that it looks at several different photos (some light, some dark) to make portions of the picture clearer.

Leaves backlit at the Botanical Gardens

laef-pattern-IMG_9461.jpg
Taken at the Matthaei Botanical Gardens in Ann Arbor, Michigan while I was experimenting with some closeup photos. I’m taking the photo with the sun behind it, shining through the greenhouse-type building that I was in.

I chose this one for a Photo Friday challenge with the topic of Patterns. I hard a had time deciding so I actually uploaded two, the next photo has leaf patterns too.

Leaf magnified at the Botanical Gardens

Taken at the Matthaei Botanical Gardens in Ann Arbor, Michigan while I was experimenting with some closeup photos. It almost looks like there is something crawling on top of it. I’m taking the photo sort of from below as the sun is above the greenhouse-type building that I was in.
